Bathroom Remodeling Tips Archives

We are remodeling our bathroom and while we were tearing out the cupboards we found that there are three layers of linoleum, the bottom layer of which is asbestos. We can’t afford to have a professional come out and do it. Is there any way that we can remove the tile ourselves? We don’t want to encapsulate the floor either, we just want to get the asbestos out of there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We moved into the house I grew up in. We’re fixing it up and remodeling a number of things. The bathroom is the current project, and we don’t want to put another tub in.

From what I’ve been hearing though, I may not be able to sell the house without it. The house is 2 bedroom/1 bath. Is there anyway around this? Like maybe building in a tiled bench into the shower?

A few months ago my mom fell down while getting out of the bathtub. This worried me. She gets around pretty good except for a cane to walk. My dad is healthy and has no problems of moving around.

They are on vacation and I would like to remodel the bathroom for my mom’s saftey while they are on vacation. It has a standard tub, standard toilet, and pedistal sink. I don’t want to change it too drastically because I am sure my dad would be really mad. Any ideas on remodeling the bathroom for the elder?

We just started remodeling our Bathroom with my husband.

And we are concerned about walls.

When we removed the original, old tile, behind it we found more cement and behind that, a wired mesh.
The upper section of walls do not have any kind of mesh, but simple a painted dry wall.

We are kind of concerned about this mesh. Should we replace it by dry wall? Or do something else?

Or how should we prepare those walls for laying tile? Does this wired mesh needed?
by the way. We are doing complete remodeling. We will change everything there.

The remodeling project will include double sinks w/ granite counter tops, tile on floor and in shower, upscale faucets/shower head, new toilet, etc. We are not sparing much for expense and I think it will look great, I just wonder if it will look as nice to other potential buyers down the road without a tub.
We do have another bathroom with a shower/tub combination.

When remodeling a bathroom, what is the correct order
1) rip off the old toilet, bath tub. etc..
2) tiling – can I put new tiles on the existing ones?
3) tiling first? or putting on the new fixture first?

My father has had 3 strokes. It is hard for him to balance himself to get in and out of the tub. I would like to have his bathroom remodeled for him. I want to have the tub taken out and replace with a walk in shower. The toilet doesn’t work like it should, but it works. I would like to get that replaced also. They both need rails around them so he can get in and out the shower and on and off the toilet with ease. Can anyone help me in finding assistance with these needs?

I’m remodeling my bathroom and looking for the correct term/keywork so I can do on-line shopping. I’ve seen built-in (indent, push-in, lodge-in?) shelves for holding bottles/soap on the shower/bath wall. It usually comes in two shelves so I can put "into" the wall to save space. Does anyone know what it calls? Many thanks.

Bathroom Remodeling….?

We are in the process of remodeling our bathroom and I am wondering if it is possible to put in an old style claw foot tub?? Are there any alternatives available that would fit better through a doorway?? Also we were looking into jet/spa tubs and a friend said something about a remodeling tub that comes in pieces and is better for installing in existing homes. I can’t seem to find these and am wondering if anyone knows anything about it. Thank you so much!! Hope someone can help with a first time diy!!

Bathroom remodeling?

Hi there!
This is my first time so here I go…
My husband and I are hoping to update our bathroom. We want to do it ourselves to save money. If we were to retile the floors and walls, replace our bathtub and add shower (we only have the tub now), replace toilet and sink (it’s a pedestal sink now), and light fixtures. What would be the order in which to tackle these projects? Our home is old and I don’t the walls are dry wall.
I’d appreciate any help you can give us. Thanks!!!

Do you own your home? If that’s the case, if there was just one thing you could change about your bathroom, what would it be? There’s a good chance that like most people, you would want to change the bathtub. Since the bathtub is such an integral aspect of your bathroom, a really nice one can positively affect the look of your bathroom. If you really want to upgrade the bathroom, then bite the bullet and get that new tub. It’s really not as hard of a remodeling project as it seems.

The first thing to determine once you have decided to start the remodel is the budget; how much? If you are also remodeling the rest of your bathroom, it is important that you not only focus on the cost of a new bathtub, but also the cost of your other supplies. If you mistakenly spend too much on a new bathtub, the rest of your bathroom remodeling plans could suffer. Also, you will likely find that having a bathtub limit or budget is the best way to save time while shopping. Knowing how much money is too much to spend will prevent you from partaking in wasteful activities like browsing through bathtubs you can’t afford to begin with.

The budget also plays a part in how your new bathtub will be installed.  If you are planning on having a professional install your new bathtub for you, you will need to keep the extra costs in mind. Although you may want to avoid paying a professional contractor, you may need to. There are a number of bathroom contractors who specialize in replacing bathtubs. In fact, some, literally, just place a new bathtub right over the old one.  It may be possible for you to do this yourself, but, in most cases, you will find that a professional contactor could have your new bathtub installed in as little as a few hours.

Regardless of whether you choose to install your own bathtub or have a professional do it for you, you will need to find a new bathtub to purchase.  If you are looking to have your old bathtub completely removed, you will likely find that you have more options.  When a new bathtub replaces an old bathtub, the tubs need to be about the same size or style. Therefore, if you are remodeling your bathroom with the hopes of getting a “new,” bathroom, you may be looking for something different.  Luckily for you, you still have an unlimited number of options.

The most popular bathtubs in the US are usually the standard tubs or the traditional tubs. These bathtubs are often installed right to the wall or placed in a corner, and they usually sit directly on the floor.  The best characteristic about these tubs is their affordability.  You can purchase a traditional bathtub for as low as two hundred dollars.

If you are looking for comfort, instead of price, you may want to look into spa-like bathtubs or even massage bathtubs. These bathtubs, as you may assume, cost more than most others.  Many massage bathtubs or spa-like bath tubs retail for around one or two thousand dollars.  If you are looking for a trendy, stylish bathtub, you may prefer to own a freestanding bathtub. Freestanding bathtubs can cost as low as five hundred dollars, but they can also reach into the thousands.

Once you have decided which type of bathtub you would like to purchase, you will need to decide on a particular tub. Perhaps, the best way to do this is to start your shopping. You may find it easier to make a decision when you can see bathtub displays set up.  For a wide selection of bathtubs, including displays, you are advised to checkout one of your local home improvement stores.
