I’m redoing my bathtub and surrounding wall remodel and i’m planning to put of panel in the ceiling over the tub and block the heater air outlet (heater outlet is also in the ceiling over the tub). The reason I want to block the heater outlet is due to rust problem since outlet soaks up lot of the hot moisture during shower. Bathroom remodel place wants me to block the outlet before they put the ceiling panel because the hot air coming down could lossen the adhesive used to glue panel to the ceiling. Can any one help me how to do this x tks

I plan to use a licensed plumber to replace the pipes with copper pipes and combine the separate shower with the exising bathtub, and put in new tile and cabinets. I assume this will require a permit (I’m in Los Angeles). My question is, will my project be approved if the electrician is not licensed in CA (he is licensed in another state)?

I am remodeling my bathroom and when I torn out the old tile i saw a severely damaged subfloor. It’s not wet but had been. The rot is all around the toilet and bathtub areas and at some points goes underneath the non structural walls between rooms. I know I should cut out the bad areas and start over but what do i do about the areas of subfloor that are rotted underneath the walls? These walls are resting on joists that do not appear to be damaged, but the subfloor is soft and flaking apart. Can i suport the joist with sisters and place a new sub floor or do i need to tear down the walls and go back to a point on an adjacent joist, replace the subfloor and rebuild the walls?

What should come first in a bathroom remodel?

Basically, I want to replace the bathtub, toilet, and sink, Plus re-do the flooring and sheet rock the walls. The house is on a concrete slab and has a regular size tub. I want to install a garden size tub. What order would I need to do everything? I’m thinking 1. Tub 2. Walls (because they have thick ceramic tiles from the 70′s) 3.Sink and toilet 4. Floors? Does that sound reasonable or do I have it in the wrong order?

    lazy husband?

This is my husband’s idea of fixing things: He "fixed" the leaking faucett in the bathtub by doubling the hose and securing it with duct tape. The faucett no longer leaks but I have to shower because the tub faucett has no water. He "fixed" the dryer exhaust by scooting the dryer to the middle of the floor instead installing a new exhaust hose that wouldn’t collapse when slid against the wall. How can I get him to fix things right? We’re not rich enough to get a handyman to do everything and I don’t think I should have to learn to do everything while he sits and watches TV.

I like the look of darker tones, but the previous owners installed light tile floors and tiles around the bathtub, light colored wood cabinets and beige counter-tops, and white walls/trim. I know I can paint my walls darker, but I don’t know how to do that without making the extremely light beige tiles on the walls and floor looking washed out. I have an extremely large bathroom so I know it could handle darker tones, it just feels so cold and sterile right now. I was thinking about restaining the cabinets and framing the giant mirrors over the sinks with a dark espresso type color (the counter is in an L-shape with a giant mirror that goes into the corners too). I was thinking maybe tan walls, but I don’t know what shade to do without washing out the tiles.. I would love to replace the tiles at least on the bathtub, but I don’t think that would be very affordable. Anybody with any ideas please help me! I feel so overwhelmed and I want my spa so I can relax! Trying to design it is way too stressful! lol Thank you to anyone that helps me!

How to retrofit a heater into a jetted tub?

So, i have an older jetted tub (1990′s or so) with no heater i know the newer ones make it easy but i’m not that lucky. I want to add a heater to it. the thing that confuses me is that the heater that they seem to sell only has a power plug. How do i get this heater to work with my tub. the pump is a air-based push button type, and i was hoping for a outlet on the pump motor, but no luck. I’d like the heater to turn on with the pump. I’ve thought about installing a switch, however the idea of sitting in a bathtub and messing with a power switch does not sit well with me.
Do i need to buy a new pump? Should i just add a new button on the edge of the tub for the heater? (who sells these if so?) What should be done here?

    Thanks for your help.
That would make sense, however the pump is on an air operated switch.

    Computer won't finish installing?

Okay, so here’s how it happens. My friend came over to drop off a computer that some lady couldn’t start. She said we could have it, but that it didn’t start. Simple enough, the starter and power button were dislodged from their sockets. so I start it up to have it crash half way through. I was worried about it so I checked the fan. Oh my god I have never seen such a mess. The filter was FULL. I rinsed it out in the bathtub and it turned the water BLACK. I burned myself several times, and I’m worried that the processor may be damaged.

And onto the problem from the details that happened since I got the computer.

So my sister, who I was working on this computer for, because she had this crap laptop, anyways, tried to install a game, Rebirth RO. Now the problem that worried me is that the natural updates didn’t install either, the XP updates, the internet explorer updates. Nothing finished installing accept for MSN9.0 Small files will install, but anything over 750 megs has a problem finishing to install. The CD drive won’t read, which I have an extra, but is there anything I can do to get it to finish installing? or is the processor damaged?

Replacing a bath tub- DIY? Loaded question!?

We just purchased a home and want to replace one of the bath tubs. It is rusty around the drain, chipped in a few places and just generally filthy. It’s a basic bathtub and we were planning on going to Home Depot and just buying a new, basic model tub. There is nothing wrong with the tile around the tub (it actually looks new) and the plumbing works fine. My question is, can we do this on our own (we have little to no handyman skills!) or do we need to hire someone. Does Home Depot install them with the purchase? How much does that cost? Or, is it cheaper to refinish the tub through a company like Rebath? Can you buy the inserts at Home Depot and do those yourself? I couldn’t find them online. Thanks for any tips and info!

    California Landlord question?

We live in California and rented 1 room in our house to someone we knew. We did not charge any deposit. We recently gave a proper 2 month notice and set the move out date to November 30th. He decided to move up his move out date to be November 1st. His rent was paid up until October 31st.

When he started moving out his stuff we noticed a water stain on the baseboard and a little water damage was also on the walls on top of the baseboard. This was the only spot in the entire room that seems to have water damage. The water stain on the wall was about 4" in diameter and it appears to be dry. I do not know if this water damage was caused by something natural since it is on ground level, but if that was the case I would think there would be more water damage around in the room.

We asked him yesturday (october 31st) when we could expect him to come get his stuff on November 1st. so we could plan our day, and he said he’ll be out clubbing on oct 31st so he’ll come when he feels like it because he was planning to pro-rate until November 1st anyways. Since we got no time from him we had to wait around the house until he got here at 3pm. When I asked him to sign a document here is what he said:

    1) He refused to sign the document that says in writing that he moved up his move out date to November 1st, and since he’s only paid up until October 31st, he owed us a prorated amount for 1 day

    2) He refused to sign the document that outlines the baseboard water damage and says that the LandLord will have a Home Inspector look at the damages and it if appears to be caused by something other than natural moisture he will be responsible for the damages, he didn’t sign

Today, (November 1st), he just came and got the rest of his stuff and left, refusing to sign anything and left with the keys. Later he rang the doorbell and quickly handed the keys to us in a plastic bag and ran off.

This is a guy who never told us about the water damage on the baseboard, never told us his bathtub was cracked, he ruined our whole weekend because he never made a time with us to come get the rest of his stuff so we had to sit home all day. Oh, did I mention he also let our neighbors in on our side yard to install cable which took us 6 months to fight and get them to take it down because it was not in standard to our association laws. He even had the odasity to tell us he wanted to see our association by-laws because he thinks it was okay to let them in (did I say he never even asked us)

He never left us his forwarding address, I do know where he works. Should I send him an certified letter to his work saying we received the keys on November 1st. He owes us 1 day prorated rent and outline the water damage and mention that if the inspector determines this was not from something natural then he owes us for the property damage. He also has 2 holes in the garage he did patch up but it still needs to be painted. I am just wondering how to handle this. If you have any questions, just ask and check back because I will add the answers to this message. Thanks
Even if I did have a deposit, could I take money from the deposit for the water damage?
So to the realtor who responded: Then tenant can get away with 1 day of not paying rent and ruin our whole day by not giving us a move-out time? I don’t think a large rental organization would let him get off that easy.
I thought he should sign the documents because that is what I thought professional rental companies did. Isn’t a renter suppose to sign an official move out date and time? At least this is what I remembered having to do when I rented from a professional company.

My landlord brought a plumber over to install a new faucet (upon my request and with my knowledge), and while the plumber was here, he also checked out my toilet, bathtub, etc. He flushed the toilet, and apparently some cat litter and other stuff came out of the toilet. I have been using flushable cat litter. He then decided to snake the toilet to solve the problem, and my landlord charged me about 0 for the repair.

I had not been experiencing any problems, and this was not an emergency repair (ie toilet was not overflowing, spouting water, etc). Maybe the plumbing system was old and I shouldn’t have been flushing kitty litter, but I was not knowingly doing anything wrong and my landlord did not attempt to solve this issue with me beforehand.

Is this legal for her to do? How, if possible, can I avoid having to pay these charges?

    Thanks!

P.S. If it makes any difference, I’m in Washington, DC.

My friend who lives in metro Manila Philippines has a serious delima and I would like very much to help her but I find it impossible since I live in the US. Her toilet, bathtub and kitchen sink are all backed up and she is frantic because she has 4 small kids and no money whatsoever. Her and the kids are forced to beg neighbors to use their facilities and it is quite an embarrassment however they have no choice. She doesn’t own the property which was previously used as a repair garage and work shop. She had a plumber in to assess her urgent situation. He explained that he would need to know where the septic and drain field were located before he could pump it out and relieve the problem. She contacted the owner of the property and was told he has no idea where it is located so the guy told her the only alternative would be to install another one which is of course very costly and in her destitute circumstances she is totally unable to raise the funds to have the new installation. Is there a sure fire way of locating the old septic tank and drain field to help her quickly at a considerable lower cost than doing an all new system on property that dosen’rt belong to her? The owner is unwilling to invest any money whatsoever in the project and he is allowing her and her kids to live there rent free already. Please help me help her!!
HER PLACE IS IN CALOOCAN CITY NEAR MANILA. THE PROBLEM IS THE PLACE SHE LIVE IN IS CONVERTED FROM WORK SHOP TO LIVING SPACE.

I’m a tenant living in a house. The landlord lives on the 2nd floor. The main floor is divided into 2 units. I live in one of the units.

Recently the landlord told me about water leak in the other unit and it’s probably due to our bathtub problem. The landlord just purchased this house for less than 1 year so he still has warranty from the builder.

Today the builder came and checked the bathtub. He said the leak is caused by the shower head. The shower head is missing a gasket in the junction so it’s leaking. We did notice a leak in the junction when we first install it, but we thought it’s ok because the water is leaking into the tub anyway.

What I don’t understand is how is it possible that a leak in the shower head that goes into the tub would cause water leaking into the other unit? The landlord claims that they pulled the floor up on the other unit because it’s all damaged. Now they want us to pay for fixing the floor in the other unit and they haven’t collected rent for the whole month. And everything is caused by the shower head without a gasket. Can anyone help?

I’m trying to understand if it’s possible that changing a shower head would cause so much damage and whether we are liable for that. Any help would be greatly appreciated

We have a smallish bungalow and our bathroom is on the 2nd floor. The tub/shower is against an outside wall partially under the slant of the roof. Because of the weird area, the last time we re-did the bathroom I suggested using the vinyl coated tub wall panels that look like tiles instead of messing around with ceramic tiles again, what a HUGE mistake. No amount of sealing and caulking the edges stopped the water from leaching back up under the panels, and within a year, most of the walls were showing definite wet spots. Wanted to try for one of those bath fitter places and see what they’d say but am afraid of the price because of the cutting and fitting involved. Now since we’ve decided to just rip out the other stuff and install ceramic tile again, my question is, what’s the best way to "finish" the tiles where they line up with the bathtub? When the old ceramic tiles were in, we kept getting gaps and cracks in the grout between the top edge of the tub and the tile edge, which is why I wanted to try the panels instead. My bathtub isn’t cast iron, its one of the newer lighter kinds. Not flimsy, but it does have some give to it. I think the "give" might be what causes those gaps and cracks, and that raises a whole new line of questions – like how to grout/seal along the edges so this doesn’t happen?? Should we have a special type of support frame around the tub? We’ll probably have to tear out the cement backer board anyway so if the tub needs any reinforcing it shouldn’t be a problem…

    Retiling Bathroom?

I’m trying to hire both a tile guy and a plumber to install a new plumbing fixture and retile a standard bathtub surround (3 sides). I’m not sure I understand how to schedule the plumber and the tile person. Can someone give me a sense on who should do what on what days and how long each task will take?

Putting in the new plumbing fixture (behind the walls)
Demoing the old tile, installing new wall board, retiling, etc.
    Installing the new fixtures

    Have I missed anything?

    Installing a shower?

I am looking at buying an older house that only has a bathtub and no shower. How much work and approximate cost to put a shower in?

we are going to be remodeling our bathroom this summer, cause it really needs it. We need a new floor, cause the bathtub is being held up by a couple two by fours i guess. And we need a new toilette, a new sink, and a new bathtub. And we are then going to put in new cheap lenolium (sp?) and we need an air vent in the roof.

So my question is, what do u think all this will cost? so i know how much i need to be saving.

and i will be buying mostly the cheapest i can find, but the best cheapest. if that helps

and the bathroom is small, really small

and we live in a trailer.

    Please help
