I am remodeling the bathroom in master bedroom. Is ceramic tile or marble better for bathroom floor and walls of the shower stand? The bathroom size is 70 square feet and the house is in California in case the answer is regional.

My friend referred a guy. So far he’s installed a new tub with a surround. The surround had a visible scratch but he installed it anyways…so I couldn’t take it back. The tub spout doesn’t sit flush to the surround on one side. He just got done putting down ceramic tile….no grout yet thank god. When I came home I noticed the grount lines were uneven in various spots. I told him about this – he came to fix them. But now those tiles are higher than the others. I’m fed up and I feel guilty for having to "fire" him – but I’m trying to cut my losses.

I am having a bathroom remodeled and the contractor that did the ceramic floor, put down wood baseboards and then durock before installing the ceramic tile. He then grouted everything, but he didn’t grout or do anything around the edge of the bathroom where the floor meets the wall. When I asked about this to another of the contractors, he said that that area would be covered with the shoe molding and didn’t need to be grouted. Is this true. Is this common practice or should the very edges of the rooom be grouted too or caulked or something. Is this just a matter of preference among contractors or did they miss a step?

We have a smallish bungalow and our bathroom is on the 2nd floor. The tub/shower is against an outside wall partially under the slant of the roof. Because of the weird area, the last time we re-did the bathroom I suggested using the vinyl coated tub wall panels that look like tiles instead of messing around with ceramic tiles again, what a HUGE mistake. No amount of sealing and caulking the edges stopped the water from leaching back up under the panels, and within a year, most of the walls were showing definite wet spots. Wanted to try for one of those bath fitter places and see what they’d say but am afraid of the price because of the cutting and fitting involved. Now since we’ve decided to just rip out the other stuff and install ceramic tile again, my question is, what’s the best way to "finish" the tiles where they line up with the bathtub? When the old ceramic tiles were in, we kept getting gaps and cracks in the grout between the top edge of the tub and the tile edge, which is why I wanted to try the panels instead. My bathtub isn’t cast iron, its one of the newer lighter kinds. Not flimsy, but it does have some give to it. I think the "give" might be what causes those gaps and cracks, and that raises a whole new line of questions – like how to grout/seal along the edges so this doesn’t happen?? Should we have a special type of support frame around the tub? We’ll probably have to tear out the cement backer board anyway so if the tub needs any reinforcing it shouldn’t be a problem…

I’ve removed the ceramic tile, but haven’t prepared the floor for vinyl tile, yet. Would it be better to fill in with the ceramic cement, or sand smooth and install plywood first, for level surface.

Seeking professional advice from fellow D.I.Y. folks. I am starting a complete bathroom remodel, What should I start ripping out first? We will still be using this bathroom off an on if needed, as a guest bathroom. Everything is coming out at one point. But I am not sure where to start. I am replacing or getting rid of the half paneling, the lighting, sink and huge avocado green vanity & cabinet, toilet, floor, wall paper under the 3 or 4 layers of paint, ceramic tile in the shower, and finally the bath tub. What would you start with??

We are getting ready to redo our bathroom floor. I am looking for suggestions on what type of floor to use. We are on a kind of tight budget and pretty much limited to Lowes for supplies so we can use our credit card. We are going to have to gut the floor and lay new floorboards down in addition to whatever flooring we use. Please suggest on what products would be best for a 0-300 total budget, including what to use as floorboard. I do not like vinyl flooring, it always seems to get dented, or ruined when wet. Pergo is way to expensive, plus I don’t know about it getting wet. I seem to be leaning towards ceramic tile at the moment. Is a certain size square better or easier? Our room we are doing is about 10 x 8.
