Bathroom remodeling ?? Please !!?

Hello people!

I am considering purchasing a major fixer-upper home. The original part was built in the early 1900′s, and the bathroom is literally atrocious! That is the perfect word for it, it is really really bad, and is the only bathroom.
Quick description: It is basically like a hallway, there are two doors, and you could walk right through it. If you sit on the toilet, which is up against the wall on the left and shut both doors, you can literally lean across and touch the other wall. The current owners actually have the toilet paper hanging from a hook on door in front of you, if that can give you an idea of how tiny this room is. There is a small sink and a tiny tub, which is in the back of the room and goes from wall to wall.
Now, there is a room adjoining the bathroom that is pretty big and right now it has the water heater, washer and dryer, etc in it which I was thinking maybe I could pull that one wall down, rearrange some things for extra space ?? My Dad used to be a plumber and said it would be possible.

Any ideas? Is it too much work to pull the wall down? And how much is it really going to cost? I’m assuming I will replace all fixtures, etc. Also, the floor needs to be ripped up as it is rotting.

The house is really great and has wonderful potential, its really just the bathroom and the kitchen that need to be redone, but these are the most expensive rooms and I’m very nervous.

What can I expect?

Thanks!

Mystery Leak. Advice?

My downstairs neighbor told me this morning that he heard dripping on his ceiling around the time I was in the shower (first time he heard it). He said it was really loud and thinks that I’m doing serious damage. He claims a leak ocurred with the previous owner–toilet gasket? And that there was a pipe leak once before several years ago. #1. I know NOTHING about plumbing. So I’m anxious about what kind of repairs I could be in for and how even to begin #2. I have limited info. How do I find this mystery leak? Even if I call a plumber will the whole floor/ceiling need to be opened up to find it? There is space between my floor and his ceiling. #3. A friend suggested that it could be the tub drain and that the tub might have to come out. I bought this place a year ago & the bathroom is really ugly. The previous owner had bathfitters — or the like installed to create a shower stall with the tub. If the tub comes out, will this require me to completely re-do the bathtub/shower stall?

My landlord brought a plumber over to install a new faucet (upon my request and with my knowledge), and while the plumber was here, he also checked out my toilet, bathtub, etc. He flushed the toilet, and apparently some cat litter and other stuff came out of the toilet. I have been using flushable cat litter. He then decided to snake the toilet to solve the problem, and my landlord charged me about 0 for the repair.

I had not been experiencing any problems, and this was not an emergency repair (ie toilet was not overflowing, spouting water, etc). Maybe the plumbing system was old and I shouldn’t have been flushing kitty litter, but I was not knowingly doing anything wrong and my landlord did not attempt to solve this issue with me beforehand.

Is this legal for her to do? How, if possible, can I avoid having to pay these charges?

Thanks!

P.S. If it makes any difference, I’m in Washington, DC.

My friend who lives in metro Manila Philippines has a serious delima and I would like very much to help her but I find it impossible since I live in the US. Her toilet, bathtub and kitchen sink are all backed up and she is frantic because she has 4 small kids and no money whatsoever. Her and the kids are forced to beg neighbors to use their facilities and it is quite an embarrassment however they have no choice. She doesn’t own the property which was previously used as a repair garage and work shop. She had a plumber in to assess her urgent situation. He explained that he would need to know where the septic and drain field were located before he could pump it out and relieve the problem. She contacted the owner of the property and was told he has no idea where it is located so the guy told her the only alternative would be to install another one which is of course very costly and in her destitute circumstances she is totally unable to raise the funds to have the new installation. Is there a sure fire way of locating the old septic tank and drain field to help her quickly at a considerable lower cost than doing an all new system on property that dosen’rt belong to her? The owner is unwilling to invest any money whatsoever in the project and he is allowing her and her kids to live there rent free already. Please help me help her!!
HER PLACE IS IN CALOOCAN CITY NEAR MANILA. THE PROBLEM IS THE PLACE SHE LIVE IN IS CONVERTED FROM WORK SHOP TO LIVING SPACE.

Retiling Bathroom?

I’m trying to hire both a tile guy and a plumber to install a new plumbing fixture and retile a standard bathtub surround (3 sides). I’m not sure I understand how to schedule the plumber and the tile person. Can someone give me a sense on who should do what on what days and how long each task will take?

Putting in the new plumbing fixture (behind the walls)
Demoing the old tile, installing new wall board, retiling, etc.
Installing the new fixtures

Have I missed anything?

I am just now starting to finish my basement. When we built 2 yrs ago we had it prepped for a bathroom and a wet bar. We are starting at the bathroom, do we put the walls up first and have the plumber out before the walls go up? Do we want the sink/tub/toilet there for him or is that not necessary?
I guess my question is what steps do I take and in what order?
Thanks in Advance!!

Bathtub: cheap, durable, quiet?

We need to replace our 60×30 BATHTUB in a small bathroom. This tub will be used DAILY as a SHOWER. (Yes, we considered shower-only but that’s what’s in the master bath. We’d like to keep a tub just in case we need one for a future grandchild or foot soak.)

I want a tub that is durable, inexpensive, quiet and easy for my plumber to install.

**Cast iron sounds good, but the weight will likely mean the install price soars, especially since this tub will be installed in a very small bathroom off a very small hall. Not a lot of maneuver room getting inside. However the toilet is currently out of the bathroom so once in, the install should be a bit easier.

**Porcelain over steel is cheap and durable, but I’ve read many complaints about super loud noise as the tub fills. This will likely mean it will be loud during my son’s long, early morning showers and, frankly, I want to wake each morning thinking we are having an earthquake. Also, I’ve heard it chips easier than enameled cast iron.

**Acrylic seems like it might be a good alternative but I’m confused between brands, how to tell acrylic from acrylic-covered fiberglass, what’s good, what’s bad, etc. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of acrylic-specific information other than waxing it to keep it looking good.

**Acrylic-covered Fiberglass is said to be flimsy and not good quality. Any buzz words I should look for to make sure I don’t mistake one of these for an acrylic tub?

**Americast–not sure about the material. It’s made by American Standard. Some say its wonderful, the best alternative to cast iron and acrylic. (which makes me want one) Others hate it, say they’ll never buy it again. (which makes me rethink wanting one)

The three walls surrounding the tub will be tiled. Do I need a special tub for this? (I’ve seen some with a lip and some without a lip. Not sure what is required.)

FYI: We are looking for a basic, no-frills tub, no whirlpool jets, no fancy design or shape. Just a good, durable, quiet, inexpensive (0 or less), easy-to-install tub for shower use.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Opinions on what to avoid?

Im not sure what I can do if anything at all if anyone can help with advice that would be so appreciated. Heres the problem I bought my first home suppose to be a happy time and your suppose to enjoy it. No I ended up with the house from hell! I feel like I was taken advantage of because there was so much that I wasnt told about this house as far as what needed to be done, and some of the things I was lied to about. If I would have known the problems I wouldnt have paid as much as I did for it and now I am stuck like a sitting duck after putting so much into it. Okay here are the details when I bought it I did by as is and i didnt have it inspected or anything I didnt realize you were suppose to do that. I bought from private party on land contract and put 13,000 into it and was told in order to get it just to what I bought it for I would need to stick another 45,000 into it. Anyhow the house still needed work as it was gutted due to fire in house. So we knew that it needed as he would of put some work. Well Im thinking like the cubboards needed to be put in toilets sinks etc. He said it needed some plumbing no it needed it all!! There was no plumbing I did all of it. He told me that the basement was a damp basement wich I kinda figured that its not finished no I get a fricken lake in my basement when it rains. Because the foundation is very very damaged. I was told nothing about all of the wood in the basement like my supports and what not are all dry rotted my plumber told me cause he tried to nail supports in for the plumbing and found out. I was told my hot water heater was new it gives me a 2min shower. Ive only been here a month and the only thing he had already installed was the bathtubs and now thats cracked too how does a brand new tub crack? I was getting electricuted everytime that I opened my garage door so I had the electric company come here and come to find out I have stray voltage the electric work that they did was done incorrectly. I called the city and asked if the house was inspected and they said no they didnt even know he sold it and that they didnt get to come here because he was suppose to call them before he sold it so my house could go up into flames when my children and I are in here sleeping. Also a couple weeks after buying the house I got a letter saying that I needed to reside it okay went to the city asked them to give me a loan they said okay until they found out how much I paid I paid over half the appraised value so they told me no they couldnt help cause there is no equity value. I than went and talked to him and he said thats good its appraised so low that means your taxes are cheaper. Thats just some of it there is so much more please Im a single mom with 3 kids I really need some advice or help.
To answer some of your questions No stupidly there was no realator. No he did not give me anything writen saying what was wrong with the house. The city inspector was the one that said he was to have it inspected before sale because he gutted it and redid the work himself (not me) Yes we went and signed papers threw his lawyer. Yes I have before pictures and what I have done pictures.

Bathroom remodeling?

We’re getting the tub redone by Bath Fitter, but we also want to get a new toilet and sink. Do we have to hire a plumber or is it possible to change them ourselves?

We’ve re-done our entire bathroom and are about to install a bathtub hand rail safety grip which is maybe around 30cm long. The bathtub runs along a tiled wall, and we’ve pretty much decided that the grip should go lengthwise horizontally above the bathtub – and centred along the length of the bathtub – but my question is How High Above The Bath?

Our plumber suggested omitting it because they can be unattractive and are more suited to elderly people, but this one has a simple contemporary design and should look OK as long as it seems close to the bathtub and not smack in the middle of the wall.

He also suggested installing it at an angle, but although that might be good in terms of safety, I think it would stand out too much.

Mostly I’m looking for opinions which agree with the horizontal centred placement but which could help me decide on the height, but all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!
