We want to add an upstairs bathroom. The room is right above the downstairs bathroom. Not sure where to start?

My husband has always done an excellent job at remodeling and fix it jobs but where do we even begin? He has previously completely gutted and remodeled 2 bathrooms but the plumbing was already in place. Does it have to be done by a licensed professional?
We live very rural, no zoning etc. It is actually an old farm house we are renovating!

Good location to put a bathroom, since the plumbing is nearby. It would be prudent to have a licensed plumber do the plumbing after you rough-in the framing. You don’t say whether you live in a city or rural location, but some cities have codes that require permits on remodel/additions. Our city recently enacted codes that prohibit homeowners from doing electrical work on their own homes. Best to be cautious. And make sure your insurance agent is kept abreast of changes – some policies will not cover homeowner-handyman renovations (or at least require inspections).
